The Google Shopping Product Feed

A product feed is a file that you need to provide to Google that contains all your product information.
This is the most difficult part of the Google Shopping setup process.
This is because this product feed must exactly match Google’s specifications. If you do not include some data or do not follow Google’s guidelines 100%, your products will not be approved and you will not be able to proceed.
A good way to create a product feed is to have a large table where the rows are all your products and the columns are all the fields Google needs.

Most of them are pretty simple: product title, price, description, item link, brand, image link etc.
But there are also some fields that you may not have by default: Google Product Category, GTIN, MPN, etc.
You can find the complete list in Google’s help documents.
How easily you can assemble this file depends on the quality of your product data and the e-commerce platform you use.
E-commerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or Bigcommerce all have apps, plugins or extensions to simplify feed creation.
The specific tool you need depends on your specific situation. However, the tools mentioned below should be enough to get you started.

Google Shopping Setup for Shopify

There is a great plugin for Shopify, which you can find here.

All you have to do is follow the installation instructions and you have created a feed for Google Shopping.

Google Shopping for WordPress /Woocommerce

Of course, there are also super simple plugins for WordPress that allow you to create Google Shopping feeds.

Here you can find 2 plugins, which I have often used myself and recommend.

  1. WooCommerce Product Feed PRO
  2. WooCommerce Google Feed Manager

Now you basically just need to set up the feeds in the plugins and assign the attributes according to your Woocommerce fields.

Now that the feeds have been created, they need to be uploaded to the Google Merchant Center

If you don’t have a Google Merchant Center account yet, you need to create one first.
Setting up this account is usually pretty simple. You need to provide your URL, which proves to Google that you actually own the domain you want to advertise on.
If you have access to Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager, you can use them to verify ownership. If this doesn’t work, try the meta tag option, which requires you to add a small meta tag to your website’s HTML code.
After you upload the feeds to Google Merchant Center, Google will start analyzing your data and will show you errors or Active Products accordingly.

This is the time when the problems often occur.
These errors and warnings indicate that there is missing or incorrect information, or that the information does not meet Google’s product data requirements.
Some of these errors and warnings are easy to fix, but others require you to look up (and add!) the product identifiers for each of your products.
This can quickly become very time consuming.
To make extensive changes to your product feed, such as adding product categories, you can use feeds rules in Merchant Center or tools such as the data feed management software providers mentioned above.
Now that the majority of your products are corrected, we are ready to create a Google Shopping campaign.
How this works, you will learn in the following article on: How to create a Google Shopping campaign.
